In the men’s game, a lacrosse head is typically strung with a piece of mesh, shooting strings, and sidewall strings. A unique part of the sport is your ability to customize your stick using these materials however you may choose. Many people pick different colors to support the current team they are on and others decide to stay with an all-white look, which is the most popular. Stringing a lacrosse head is a tedious skill to learn but many people, including myself, believe it is the best way to play the game.
Recently though, the company Warrior has invented a new product that eliminates mesh, shooting strings, and sidewall strings to a certain extent. They are calling the product the “Warp” and it is certainly an interesting idea. The product is designed to have a unique looking piece of mesh molded into the head at the factory, and then it is shipped to retailers. From the store, the stick will immediately be able to be used as the mesh is already infused into the head, eliminating this task of having to string your head. At first, the product was very bad and not many people used it. As they have begun to have more feedback on the product, there have been significant improvements. Some of the best pro players in the world have been tasked with backing the product, in hopes that everyone else will follow along. Many people, however, don’t believe that the Warp will ever be able to replace mesh and strings.
One benefit to this product that I see is the ability for young kids learning the game to be able to pick up and stick and use it right away. This is one use of the Warp that I believe has the most potential for sales. To be used in a high level collegiate or pro game at its current state, would not be the best idea as it has some technical flaws that keep it behind. Although it is a great idea in concept, the technology and current version of the Warp is not advanced enough for the lacrosse community to accept. Many people still enjoy stringing lacrosse heads and it will take much more from Warrior to convince everyone that the Warp is the future of the sport.
