In the world of NCAA lacrosse, there are many people who are very happy with the school they attend and everything that it has to offer for them. As one might assume, there are people on the other side of this spectrum who are not satisfied and displeased with their school. Whether it be they don’t get along with the head coach or simply need a different route academically, many student athletes decide they want to, or need to, transfer to another school.

Before the NCAA Transfer Portal, which I’ll explain in a bit, the transfer landscape and culture was very secretive and sometimes unfair. Before a player can contact and openly start discussions with other schools, they had to get released from the team by their current head coach. For many players that aren’t necessarily sure that they want to leave their respective school, this is a tough decision to make. Do you risk making your current coach angry by exploring other options? Or, do you not ask for your release and sneakily communicate with other coaches? Although breaking the rules, in this tactic you are able to explore other options while also keeping a good relationship with your current coach. The result of all of this is a jumbled mess of players and coaches contacting each other both illegally and legally in the summer months, causing quite a stir in some cases. It is very easy to see how, the transfer culture and how people would often go about their business, was not the most effective. The solution to this problem is the NCAA Transfer Portal.

NCAA Logo

This, essentially, is a medium in which all players who have elected to get their release from their current team and are looking to transfer are able to have their name and contact info available for all coaches. This portal is then able to be accessed by all NCAA lacrosse coaches across every division. From this point, if your name is in the Transfer Portal, you are able to be contacted by any coach at any time. By doing this, they make it fair for everyone in how they might negotiate with a player to come pay at their school. Now, every player that is transferring schools will be entered into the Transfer Portal. Now that every coach is aware of every player looking to transfer, they do not need to rely on word of mouth to hear about a potential star player looking to transfer schools. Overall, this Transfer Portal is an extremely healthy way to go about a student athlete’s decision to study and play at the school they would like to. With the Transfer Portal now in place it will allow for coaches and players to find the perfect fit for their teams and lives.
